This Summer, NewMama and I had the opportunity (and permission!) to allow Ramsay in his Pappy's pool and test his innate swimming abilities.  Dogbert did not disappoint!  He swam perfectly fine without any help, but we bought him a lifejacket in case those little legs got too tired.
He hasn't been brave enough to jump into the water himself but swims happily once he's eased into it by his mom, and is comfortable enough to "water-fetch" a frisbee and his sharkfin floatie!

Wowww! You're so brave. Maybe we can get our mom to buy us a cool life jacket too.

We were a little reluctant to put him in at first, as his only exposure to water up til then was in places where his feet could touch the bottom. We were pleasantly surprised that the "hard-wiring" kicked in and he started dog-paddling as soon as he hit the pool - and this was BEFORE we even got the life vest! Of course, NewMama was (and always is) there to supervise in case he got into trouble, but he knew exactly what to do. He swam directly for the edge of the pool and the steps. After orienting himself, he was able to fetch the frisbee and his sharkfin with minimal assistance. Kudos to Mother Nature for building swimming into the dog mind! =)
