Few things get dogbert's attention quite like a treat. NewMama and I have used this to our advantage in training the little snausage to do just about everything that he knows. Occasionally, he'll come up with tricks of his own to earn a "treat-um". The hard part is trying to get him to remember and repeat these spontaneous acts so that we can associate a command with it. Luckily, he is so treat-driven that the odds of him repeating one of his original tricks are pretty good! Here's his variation on "down", which really looks like more of a "crouch"...
